Kim Vanderwall consults with nonprofit organizations in the areas of strategic planning, board development and research. Kim is particularly effective with small, community-based or culturally-based organizations. She is the coauthor of the groundbreaking study, Coloring Outside the box: One Size Does Not Fit All in Nonprofit Governance, a study of governance in small cultural, rural and community-based organizations; and the subsequent Ten Dimensions that Shape your Board, a workbook to help boards soar within their own cultures and values.

Before founding Vanderwall Consulting, she held a variety of positions with small and large human service and social justice organizations. Among her highest achievements is the ability to build a great outhouse or clay oven; both of which she learned to do while in the Peace Corps in Paraguay.

Kim has an MA in Human Development from St. Mary’s University and a BA in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has extensive training and experience in cross-cultural dynamics, is fluent in Spanish and has been fluent in Portuguese and Guarani.

Kim is a Past President of the Girl Scout Council of the St. Croix Valley and the Minnesota Women’s Golf Association. Other community involvement includes board roles with Colors Magazine, Institute for Renewing Community Leadership and Minnesota Women’s Golf Association Foundation; serving as a volunteer mediator through the Dispute Resolution Center, and being the lead bicyclist for the Melpomene race and the 623 Walk/Run. She also likes to swim and do crossword puzzles.
